Celebrating International Women's Day
5 Powerful Women and Style Icons from Past and Present.
Tuesday the 8th of March is International Women’s Day: a day where we celebrate the achievements of women and recognise the need for action against inequality.
This year’s theme is #breakthebias; it calls out the need for a world which is diverse and free of discrimination. In celebration of women everywhere, we’ve collated five inspiring women who are style icons, and detailed how they inspire us.
1. Betty White
Why We’re Celebrating Her
With a career spanning seven decades, Betty White is a pioneering figure in the entertainment industry. Dubbed the ‘First Lady of Television,’ she was the first woman to produce a sitcom and she set a Guinness world record for the longest spanning career of a female entertainer. She was an advocate for animal welfare, LGBTQI+ rights and racial equality. She was also a comedic genius with savage one liners, who established herself in a business that is dominated by men. RIP, Betty.
Why We Love Her Style
Anyone can agree that being able to pull off the same haircut for 50 years is impressive! Betty White rocked countless trends throughout the years, from shoulder pads to hot pants, but she was rarely seen without her trademark diamonds and pearls. She’s an authority on timeless style at any age. Get Betty’s look with our diamante and pearl styles!
2. Serena Williams
Why We’re Celebrating Her
Anyone who’s ever watched Serena Williams play tennis will know that she’s a force to be reckoned with. She has won 23 Grand Slam titles, establishing herself the player with the most wins in the Open Era. She’s the highest earning female athlete of all time, and she’s credited with bringing a new level of athleticism to the women’s professional tennis tour. She’s also an advocate for gender equality and has called out that women’s achievements in sports need more public recognition. Preach.
Why We Love Her Style
Serena embodies the principle of wear what you want, not what you’re expected to. Frequently making headlines for her bold style choices on the court – be it a denim tennis skirt, a tutu or a full-body catsuit – Serena shows off her personality through her style, and it makes her a joy to watch. She’s almost always wearing cute pendant necklaces while she plays too. Get Serena’s look with our layered chains!
3. Frida Kahlo
Why We’re Celebrating Her
Frida Kahlo is a feminist icon. A Mexican painter who blended folk art techniques with surrealism and magical realism, Frida is so integral to the cultural history of Mexico that her paintings are protected by law to prevent their export from the country. Her paintings offer an uncompromising view of female experience and form, and she remains one of the world’s most recognisable artists long after her passing.
Why We Love Her Style
We’re not the only ones that love Frida’s style. She’s such a significant figure in art and fashion that her style has inspired collections by Moschino, Jean Paul Gaultier, Valentino and Alberta Ferretti. The public obsession with Frida stems from a dual fascination with the darker aspects of her life, coupled with her success despite the adversity she faced. She’s also celebrated for her individuality and instantly recognisable style: the floral headbands, the ornate earrings and colourful printed fabrics. Frida’s image has come to represent the fluidity and diversity of beauty. Get Frida’s look with our flower crowns and floral accessories.
4. Beyoncé
Why We’re Celebrating Her
All hail the queen. It would be impressive enough that Bey was the lead singer in Destiny’s Child, one of the most successful girl groups of all time – but this was just the beginning. She’s since established herself as the highest earning black musician of all time, and she’s the most awarded female artist of all time. She’s also spoken out in support of feminism, same-sex marriage, and racial equality and she’s a dedicated philanthropist to boot.
Why We Love Her Style
It’s big, it’s bold, it’s fabulous. Beyoncé finds creative ways to incorporate her heritage into her costumes, and her outfit choices and stand-out accessories always bring fun and flair to the red carpet. She takes statement earrings to a whole new level, and encourages others to be more daring with their style choices. Get Beyoncé’s look with our statement earrings!
5. Emma Watson
Why We’re Celebrating Her
Aged 11, Emma became a household name through her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter franchise. She’s since paved her way from child star to leading lady with poise, and she’s just as impressive off camera. While juggling starring roles in multiple films, she earned an English Literature degree at Brown University. She’s a UN Goodwill Ambassador, and she helped launch the campaign HeForShe which advocates for gender equality. She’s also a founding member of Times Up UK – which seeks to support victims of sexual harassment.
Why We Love Her Style
Emma oozes laidback chic. She chooses pieces which are simple yet beautiful, and she follows a similar ethos with her jewellery: small pieces with big impact. Emma rocks the stacking trend, where a lot of a little goes a long way. Get Emma’s look with our stacking styles!
